Inquiry Question
How can FNMI voices be more authentically brought into the music classroom?
Rational
There is so much that we can learn from FNMI perspective, and I think that courses other than social studies find it hard to integrate these voices authentically. The music classroom is no exception to this, and I see a need for more research in this area. Throughout my PIP I hope to learn more from the FNMI perspective and how to incorporate them in a music classroom. It is also fitting that one of Rideau Park Schools initiatives is to prioritize “continuing conversations about reconciliation, identifying specific connections within each discipline” for the 2021-22 SDP goal setting within students ``improving their capacity to demonstrate perseverance, tolerance, and acceptance when challenged physically, socially, and emotionally.” Rideau Park school is one of the leaders within the CBE system focusing on TQS 5 so my PIP would also benefit the school.
Incorporating FNMI perspective into the classroom has been a goal of mine since PSI and I believe that this PIP will allow me to explore this further. I have enjoyed looking for literature written by people from the FNMI community; however, I have not really brought this research into the music classroom. Being placed in a music classroom at Rideau Park school has provided me with many great resources to explore and an amazing network of support. For these reasons I think that pursuing a PIP focusing on FNMI perspectives in the music classroom would be a great fit.
