Through Exploring the Calgary Public Library I have discovered some books that can be used to bring FNMI perspectives into the music classroom. These resources are focused of students in kindergarten to grade 6.
Metis Singing Sticks: A story about Metis Musical Traditions
Written and illustrated by Leah Marie Dorion, a Metis individual, this book goes through that Metis tradition of singing stick through story. Students can relate to the character ins the book who are a family. It also reinforces the passing down of knowledge from older generations. It includes a list of materials and instructions for making singing sticks. This would translate very well into a lesson for grade 3 - 6 students.
The Sharing and Caring Circle
Written by Theresa “Corky” Larsen-Jonasson, illustrated by Jessika von Innerebner, this a story directed at kindergarten to grade 2 students. Theresa "Corky" Larsen-Jonasson is a proud Cree/Danish Métis Elder with roots in Red Deer and Maskwacis First Nations. This story introduces young learned to sharing circles. It also teaches students about talking about their feelings and not what others are doing. Musical concepts can be brought into the sharing circle in that every students gets so share a musical idea whether that is through singing, actions, or playing.
The Sharing Circle: Stories about First Nations Culture
Written by Theresa Mause-Dallien illustrated by Arthur Stevens this book goes through several stories from First Nations Culture. Although not directly related to the music classroom Sharing stories is much like sharing music. Taking the time to learn these stories is a simple way to increase your FNMI knowledge and support students in their learning.
Indigenous Peoples in Art and Music
Written by Erin Nicks this a great resource for students to explore. This is an informational book that goes through different indigenous are forms and artists. This book was published in 2020. It is always important to check informational book for a publication date to get the most up to date information.
