During my third practicum semester I learned that my mentor had been working with Robert Buckley's with the bands. I was very fortunate that he already had purchased some of the pieces for the school. I decided to continue working on Dreamcatcher by Robert Buckley with the grade 9 band. The piece is a grade level 1 and 1/2. This piece is great for grade 8 - 10 depending on the students. It is also a piece that can continue to be worked on incorporating musical phrases and dynamics. This piece can be researched and more emotion can be added. It it a great piece that can grow with students abilities.
Dreamcatcher is based on the Iroquois folk melody Ho Ho Watanay. This piece also draws inspiration from the Ojibwe legend of the dreamcatcher. The folk melody Ho Ho Watanay is a recognizable melody as it has been used in other educational setting. A link to a recording and the sheet music can be found here.
